Were Hayek’s Monetary Policy Recommendations Inconsistent?

چکیده
Contrary to the claims that Hayek’s views on monetary policy were inconsistent, we show that Hayek was never an advocate of any particular monetary policy. In particular, we reject the view that early Hayek was a money stream stabilizer, while late Hayek was a price level stabilizer. We argue that Hayek was always aware that each practical monetary policy involves difficult trade-offs and was thus reluctant to impose his own value judgment about what people should strive for.

Monetary Policy in a Hayekian Supply Side Model
In this paper standard macroeconomic models are combined with the Hayek-Garrison model of the business cycle in order to demonstrate in which way modern central banks are prone to initiate boom-bust-cycles through monetary policy. It is shown under which conditions such a policy will occur and why central bank authorities tend to be misled by an apparently stable price-level. Without central ba...
متن کاملNetwork Effects and Hayek’s Proposal for Competing Monies
Given the renewed interest in alternative monetary systems, it is conceivable that some may reconsider Hayek’s proposal for competing monies. I attempt to show that Hayek underestimates the importance of network effects. As a result, his confidence in believing the mere admission of competing private currencies will spontaneously generate a more stable monetary system is unfounded. After review...
متن کاملMonetary Calculation and the Unintended Extended Order: The Misesian Microfoundations of the Hayekian Great Society
In the last decade, a small group of Austrians has attempted to argue that there are crucial distinctions between the Misesian and Hayekian lines of influence, and that the former is the superior. This paper argues that the group has both misread Hayek and underplayed the similarities of Mises and Hayek. More specifically, it sees Mises’s emphasis on monetary calculation and goal-driven human a...
متن کاملHayek’s Early Cycle Theory Re-examined
This paper examines two aspects of Hayek’s cycle theory of the early 1930s, as expressed in the two complementary works Monetary Theory and the Trade Cycle (original German edition 1929, English translation 1933, reprinted 1966; henceforth referred to as MTTC) and Prices and Production (first edition 1931, revised edition 1935). The first aspect concerns Hayek’s methodological approach to the a...
متن کاملMonetary and Fiscal Policy Dynamics in an Asymmetric Monetary Union
This paper investigates the dynamic effects of monetary and fiscal policy in a monetary union, which is characterized by asymmetric interest rate transmission. This asymmetry gives rise to intertemporal reversals in the relative effectiveness of policy on member country outputs. The direction and the number of these reversals depend on whether policies are unanticipated or anticipated. We also ...
